I may not have raised the most amount of dosh (the pissing contest of the fundraising part of this gig was never my bag), but with my rollercoaster of health issues over the month of November, I've been in the rather fortuitous position of being able to have open, honest and stark conversations about men's health with mates, work colleagues, associates and (on a rather bizarre afternoon) a couple of deros down the road. And that's what this Movember Malarky really is all about - raising real awareness amongst us blokes that getting that weird little lump, or that strange feeling in the nads region, or that not-quite-happy feeling in noggin, checked out. It's the difference between being a bloke and being a dickhead.

Oh, and finishing up the month by being delivered a clean bill of health is fucking tops.

Well before you know it the month ofMovember is nearly over - it seems to have flown past. My mo has been getting very prickly lately and Sweet Thang just veers away whenever I come close to kissing her. However the baby just smiles...

9 days in and I actually have something to show for it. Merv Hughes isn't exactly running scared, but I can't help but feel that I am ahead of this point last year.

It still looks pretty narrow, so I am tipping I will end up with the Errol once again.

Actually the more I look at that =>>> photo, the more I become concerned about the world weary eyes staring back than the childish state of my Mo. So if you don't want to donate to the Mo, donate to bring back the youthful sparkle to my eyes (or at least to convince me to wear sunglasses next photo).

The All-stars's Mos that I see around work and on this blog are really starting to show the splendour you would expect from gentlemen of this calibre. Bob is running true to form and spanking all in the donations stakes, while sporting a Mo that would make a British prison guard proud!

Al and Ben are showing the benefits facial folicle experience while I am keenly awaiting Bart's next animal installment (I am hoping for something in the poisoneness reptile range). We haven't seen anything from Charles of the West as yet, is he lulling us into a false sense of security????

I have decided to take part in this year's Movember after letting my upper lip have a rest in 2010. It seems to have worked as I now have a farly good fuzzy growth after only two days on the job...

This year I am posting photos of myself in front of various local landmarks and will see how that works as a marketing tool for garnering donations, which is what it all about really.

Thanks to PNB's generosity I have already pawned my fellow team members on the fundraising front - will be waiting a while for any of them to get above the zero dollars mark I reckon - that is the real competition! From recollection I raised more funds then the entire Magnum P.I. All Stars all on my onw last time we went head-to-head - or is it mo-to-mo??? This time I have joined with the enemy and we are working together to raise funds for the cause...

It's been a few years since I've seen my chin. Must say, since the trim this morning I can't get used to it. The thoughtful beard-stroke is now a gesture of outright wankiness (it was suave beforehand, you see), looking off into the middle distance with that pensive stare now just looks like I'm constipated, and that seriously funny gag of letting the cappuccino froth settle in the top lip bristles sadly falls flat.

The ladies at work are going to shit bricks when I rock up in the morning.

Got off to a late start. Between replacing weatherboards on the house, betting on the Melbourne Cup and counting my winnings, it was 5pm before I actually shaved.

It's a good thing I tend to start slow, pity I tend to finish slow as well!

This should be a great Movember with a team of 10 as of today, thanks to a great response from my workplace. Guys, feel free to post updates here and if I haven't sent you an invite then just ask. Remember the slogan "the best or nothing", I have nothing covered so I am relying on you guys for the best.

This is my final Movember post for 2009.

In this post I give you ............. The Errol!!!

I fell in love with The Errol for the 12 hours I had it. It sits far enough off the top lip to go un-noticed when eating and the like. It was surprisingly easy to shape using only my normal razor. It provides a transition point from the bottom of the face to the top, splitting the canvas that is my head into two distinct parts.

The Errol was the first mo I actually thought I could live with every day.

RIP Errol, you are dearly missed.

Ps: Yes that is yet another Hawaiian shirt.

Well that is probably my silliest hat for the whole month...

Pre-op before getting day surgery to remove a cyst from my eyelid on the last day of Mo-vember, I tried taking another one afterwarsd but the drugs had kicked in and it is pretty blurry...

So my Movember takings were around $650 bucks towards the cause which I was very happy with - probably 6 times as much as I thought that I would actually raise. I have to say the whole Movember thing is an incredibly effective way to raise money - now if only I can get my new cause started - 'Beards for Bob' then I will really rake in some moolah!

Of course I know that there is no bigger loser then someone who is sporting a mo-vember mo in December but I ams till proudly growing my bushy shrub on my face - not because I want to keep the thing but because I am off to Sydney tonight and will be attending my sister's 40th on the weekend so want to show the whole family the thing 'in the flesh' as theys ay.

Can't wait to hear what my nieces and nephews think - it will probably scar them for life!!!

Better Late Than Never - Maybe?

I made a foolish mistake on 30 November by agreeing to meet some old Army mates at the Caxton for a quick half a dozen beers. I compounded this mistake by inviting them back to my place for a small whisky when the bar shut. A couple of chairs made it off the verandah and my recollection is hazy at best.

I'm trimming the mo down to guido proportions over the next couple of days. I'll post when it is at its MOst ridiculous.

So that is how it ended. Sadly I remember classmates in Year 7 with more impressive growth than that. That said, I am incredibly proud of the job that the Magnum P.I. Allstars have done this Movember. Some cash raised, Hawaiian shirts aplenty, silly hats askew and a ton of fun had.

Thanks to all team members, guest posters (Bob) and donators. A special thanks to all the team members significant others that have had to suffer not only being kissed by the mos, but also having to look at them.

I will probably write one more post tomorrow as I am going to have a shot at turning this thing into a proper Errol. I have no idea how to do it, but a lack of knowledge, experience, talent and intelligence has never stopped me before.

My last post solicited a request from Steve for a "wink-and-a-gun" shot. Well I totally failed at that, so I'll leave you with a "half-a-wink-and-a-gun".

Actually this one was probably a better attempt, but the expression doesn't have the same degree of sleazy misplaced confidence and so it just doesn't work.

So this is it. The End of Movember. Which must mean it's Movember Round in the A-League. Producing quite a decent swag of dirty slugs and poorly thought out lip luggage, but nothing quite on the scale of enthusiastic stealth-ginger midget Roar midfielder Matty McKay a few years ago with a handlebar-inspired, Ned Kelly Goes To The Blue Oyster Bar special that defied description, explanation, gravity and taste all at once. Sadly, yet perhaps thankfully, the interweb contains no photographic evidence of this masterwork. Which means yet again, ~~the goggles do nothing~~ the greatest player never to pull on the gold shirt for his country has to step up and save the A-League's embarrassment. Well one of them anyway, if rubbish crowds, playing in 40 degree temps and Kevin 'Bloody' Muscat aren't enough.

Don't say I never do nuffin' for ya, Australia.

It's been great fun being part of this, both the growing and the cataloguing of the mos in question. Really enjoyed it, and I'm sure my fellow travellers on Team Magnum would say the same. To them, to everyone who donated, and to everyone who joined us on the Movember journey, thanks for making it AWSM.

So I couldn't get an Ushanka all that quickly. I found a substitute furry hat - that was way too small for my boofhead! Small furry hat modeled by flatmate Elle. I'm in the classic Greg Chappel hat - a canvas hat designed for a day in sun and marketed quite well by an ex Australian cricket captain. Elle loved Jennicki's efforts, and had to join in. 4 more days, and I can find plenty more silly hats!

His inspiration for choice of t-shirt comes from the current Lobes controversy raging at the Cheeseburger. Due to an unfortunate trick of the light in the toilet at work, a dodgy iPhone camera and *insert valid & vaguely plausible excuse for poor photo here* this photo doesn't truly represent the magnificence of my mo.

In real life it has reached a length where it can be annoying but catches the froth from a well poured beer which is the ultimate purpose of all good mos.

In other news the other part of the experiment has turned into a failure. The hair on my head will grow back, albeit very slowly BUT

the hair that i have been shaving since i was 10, is receding. So it looks like the last vestiges of my youth have been lost. Oh well I’ll always have my Star wars Lego.

Yup, looks suspiciously like a mo.

The shirt is an antique, a genuine article 'Bodyhugger' from 1971, which coincidentally was the last time it fitted the old man. It was liberated in a daring raid by my fashionista bro. However only someone with my rugged looks was ever going to do such piece of art (which it is) justice. The motif is allegedly Dutch garden scenes, with the overarching suspicion the designer was consuming the contents of a Dutch garden in combustible form when he came up with the concept.

A small update to show i'm still attempting this madness.
For very brief moments i forget i have an insect on my lip

The growth seems to have slowed. I caught a hair in my teeth the other day.
It hurt like hell and i cried like a little girl

The hair on my head can now me pinched, am a little concerned that it doen't seem to be regrowing much at the front. But i’m glad i decided to grow my hair at the same time- look slightly less stupid. only slightly. Thinking about keeping the soul patch thingo come december 1. I thought it appropriate that at just over halfway I reflect on the success of Team Magnum (and special guest poster Guru Bob).

What started as a bit of a "why don't we" on twitter has turned into a truly hair raising endeavour. I cannot begin to express my admiration for all team members and their awe inspiring upper lip installations!

Over $400 raised and we haven't even kicked into gear yet.

Although now I have to do something about that chin... all three of them!

My new theory is that facial hair is the homo-spaien version of antenna because you can feel threats easier before they actually touch your skin. Once I grew a beard for a couple of months but it always annoyed me that I felt like it entered the room before I did - you can just feel so much more through your folicles then when cleanly shaven. Apparently this thing is very nasty on the skin when I kiss anyone!

Normally women don't start to grow a proper 'stache until after menopause, but I decided to go ahead and use the power of my feminine wiles to put all dormant upper lip hairs at attention.

And, as is always the case when I use the power of my feminine wiles, I failed to get a rise out of anything but my patience.

So I turned to my local pharmaceutical company (hello, Pfizer!) for facial follicle assistance.

My last update lamented my mo's lack of progress. The potential for failure weighed heavily on me and I found myself at a crossroad. In one direction lay surrender and much drowning of sorrows, in the other dedication, hard work and sacrifice for a slim shot at the the celebratory drinks that come with success.

The spirit of Magnum made my choice an obvious one and so after a distracted workday last Monday I took the rest of the week off to focus on mo building activities.

It was a long week but the hard work, sacrifice and dedication has brought the reward of discernible growth.

It is still quite narrow but has darkened a little and is starting to look a bit scruffy. Spectators are no longer faced with the dilema of trying to determine whether it is an intentional mo or just poor grooming, kind of like when you aren't sure whether to ask a women when she is due.

For observant readers, yes that is yet another Hawaiian shirt, more of that next time.

Better late than never, here is my first third of Movember effort. It took me nine days to make it worth shaving. The black will fade out and the red will take over by the end. And, to go with Havock's twitter posts, I even have a Military hat option.

Pimping myself out - anyone who sponsors me at least $10 can have a silly hat request as well. Choices are medieval helmet, coronet, cricket hat, baseball hat, paintball helmet, strange superhero helmet, and a couple of randoms.

Hey guys - here is a slightly more casual look. Note the slight sculpting of the mo towards the edges...

However enough of these hirsute shenanigans - the real object of this hairy project is to raise money! A couple of tips on how to do this better based upon my own experience :

1. ASK people to give you money! This may seem to be a very obvious tactic but it hardly ever fails - most Aussies are too embarressed to actually ask anyone for money when they are involved in fundraising - Americans seem to be much better at it (as are those annoying backpacker types who hassle you in the street to join Amnesty or whatever is paying their salary for the day). In the case of Mo-Vember they have made it much easier by providing the tools to do it on the Mo-space website. Most blokes are so relieved that someone else is going through the hassle of growing a mo that they are happy to contribute and a lot of my funds have come from people I haven't seen in years and may never actually see the mo in person.

2. Prime the Plate - if you are sitting there with $0 in donations - it is much harder to get other people to be the first to donate. This of course has been a mainstay of the Catholic Church for centuries and hardly fails - put your own money where your mouth is and make a donation of the size that you hope other people will make. Also it would just be more embarressing to go through the whole mo-month without raising a cent.

Anyway I am off back to work - good mo-growing and good luck with fundraising - after all that is the real point!!!

As you can see from this photo, the world of high finance and banking is an extremely serious business, I'm pondering here at this point WHO we should CAP. The mo's coming along nicely, had the first night last night, where it was starting to twitch and drive me slightly nuts with the pillow. It really does just complete what is already a rather awesome package.

Progress has slowed if not stopped altogether. This is me yesterday.

My expression adequately conveys my concern which reached a sufficiently high level to take the reminder of the week off to focus on accelerating growth (oh and there is some exam thing I have to do Friday).

My reasons for doing this were twofold, one was to support movember and all it’s good workand the other was to do a little experiment. I have entered the final stage of my little experiment.
what i wanted to do was
(a) find out if i could grow facial hair
(b) find out if the hair on my head would grow back
(c) If the hair on my head grew back, would it grow back at the same speed as the hair on my face
(d) find out if any gray had snuck in there.

I received JP's first photo today and it makes compelling viewing, as much for the 1000 yard, I am in deadline hell stare as the 6 day mo (looks like he is going for the Magnum mo with a bolt on Shannon Noll below the bottom lip).

Moments later, in a clear example of the power of Magnum, I recieved the following photo.

A decent shirt, exposing some Selleckesque chest hair. A tilt of the head and some eyebrow action reminicent of the over the shoulder Magnum look and the transformation from jaded jaggerauthor to charismatic beach bum P.I. is complete.

All things are better with a touch of Magnum!

So I thought I would post an update photo. In order to distract from my pathetic excuse for a mo, I have donned my dodgiest Hawaiian shirt in true Magnum tradition.

As you can see my mo is a fairly good reproduction of the pimple-faced teen in the Simpsons.

In order to claw back some dignity I have included a closer up shot that displays my mo in all it's glory.

It's not going to be a Magnum, it doesn't even reach my nose! I think I will be heading down the Errol path by neccessity.

Unlike bloody Albie Mangel, my facial hair is not long enough to grasp. Nor is it uniform in colour; there is the odd grey poking through. No one has commented on it of their own volition. Normally it takes one, sometimes two prompts. Nonetheless I persevere with the dream of resembling Merv Hughes by 30 November.

Fifth morning update: bit of cover on the pitch

Not as heroically Graham-Hill-dodgy as the one on the Newy Jets' keeper in last night's A-League game, but then again I didn't ship three goals. The one thing about Movember which disappoints is that it's not in the middle of footy season. The A-League boys do their best to grow truly dodgy mo's - to the point of dedicating the last round of play in the month of Movember to the cause - but given that most of Australia wouldn't be able to pick Shane Smeltz out of a lineup let alone tell Kevin Muscat from Kevin 'Bloody' Wilson, it doesn't have quite the same impact as, say, the entire South Sydney first grade team including Rusty Crowe growing big eff-off outlaw handlebar mo's like Lemmy from Motorhead. However, as Team Magnum's Official A-League Correspondent (noone else wanted the gig, or even saw a need for it) I'll be keeping a weather eye on developments in the round ball code and hope to bring you examples of incredibly poorly considered moustache action from the sporting fields of Australia. Cross fingers for some representation from the nation's cricketers as well.

I have never had a moustache or beard.
As a general rule i shave my face and my head every day. It takes me 15-20 minutes if i am standing in the mirror, up to 45minutes if i am reading or wandering about the house spreading my own version of pixie dust.

Since i was 20 the most i have gone with out shaving was 3 days.
So for some reason i decided to join this merry band of men.

The first week is going to be no shaving at all to see if the hair on my head grows at the same rate as my face. My first day at work i got pinged straight away as to what i was doing.

Now people are staring at me, remember normally i am brutally clean shaven

I am going to form this jungle into a moustache on Saturday or sunday morning. There is another guy at work here doing this, but i am slaughtering him. And for the record the hair on my head is growing slower, my face hair is able to be pulled on.

A shorter history of facial hair

Hi there. I'm Dr Yobbo. You may remember me from such blogs as Dr Yobbo's World of Bollocks or that dodgy one about ficticious rock bands or that food one of Beeso's which I can't think of anything to write for now that Dr Mrs Dr Yobbo is doing the cooking. Although for the purposes of this discussion (or at least for the Movember team registration) I'm not Dr Yobbo, I'm a James Smith, whatever that is. Why James Smith? Well John Smith would have been too obvious, Ian Smith was a gobby NZ wicketkeeper, Smith & Smith are the Kiwi version of Windscreens O'Brien and Engelbert Humperdinck would have made no bloody sense whatsoever. So James Smith it is. Apparently.

Now that we've got introductions out of the way... facial hair, the uses and etiquette thereof. And whether it's ever appropriate for gingas to grow any. It's a pertinent point as we have a decent ranga contingent amongst our playing roster this Movember, yours included - though as a ranga of Etruscan descent at least I'm a class apart from you Celtic convict bloodnuts - and while some engagingly deluded womenfolk seem to find this attractive, it's a simple fact that ginger facial hair suits nobody, apart from Dutch porn stars and geography teachers.

I first grew a beard about ten years ago. It was a goatee, because it was the '90s, and it was what you did back in those heady post-grunge days. I didn't grow it to look like a geography teacher. I grew it because I was 21 and sick of being carded for ID everywhere I went... pubs, clubs, bottle shops, cinemas, video rental stores, driver licencing offices, you name it. Even got carded by my parents at home once. Fact. Apparently I wasn't getting in with these shoes, but I knew they just reckoned I had dodgy ID.

Anyway, it worked. I stopped getting carded and I also started getting orders of magnitude more action with The Ladies, though with the proviso that ten times bugger all is still not much. Later, during a particularly productive period of unemployment, the goatee became a full beard. It went everywhere with me. I got married in it. Even took it on holiday. Here it is enjoying a beer at the World Superbikes at Brands Hatch in the UK last year with me and my mate Chris who appears to be about to be struck by lightning, but as it turns out, wasn't. Probably because he was protected by the AWSMness of my shifty ginger beard. I have no scientific basis to support this claim, which makes it at least as efficacious a cure as homeopathy.

However, after that things grew a little sour. We grew apart. Well, to be honest, there was violence involved. I admit it. I attacked my beard with a set of clippers. It was unprovoked and it was brutal. I don't know what it was. I guess I was just sick of looking like a geography teacher. Since then, apart from a carefully maintained frisson of stubble, facial hair and Your Correspondent have gone our separate ways.

Until now.

Well, it's for charity, I guess. And as Alexei Sayle once pointed out, you can do whatever the hell you like for charity. If Hitler had invaded Poland for spina bifida it would have been all right.
